Curtis Gates Lloyd was born in Florence, Kentucky, on July 17, 1859, to Nelson M. and Sophia Lloyd. A younger brother of chemist and pharmacist John Uri Lloyd, he joined John U. in Cincinnati. He work first as an apprentice, earning his certificate as a pharmacist, then as a wholesale drug salesman, and finally as bookkeeper and manager of Standard Publishing Co.
